Apparently, Joe Biden’s support of the Hyde abortion amendment made him un-electable to thoroughly modern Democrats. Therefore, he moved left to join Governor Northam’s (D-VA) nonchalance about infanticide and Governor Cuomo’s (D-NY) approval of late-term abortions. Hey – it is the liberal order of the day, because self-proclaimed progressives demand nothing less than federally funded abortion-on-demand without even common-sense caveats.
I’m betting pro-life militants trigger a backlash from moderate Republicans and independent voters, who generally support doctor-assisted abortions, especially when common sense prevails (such as in cases of rape). Based on the latest Gallup polls, there is no sweeping movement to ban all abortions: not when 48 percent of all Americans self-describe as pro-choice – – as do 40 percent of all Christians. Still, many so-called liberals issue angry screeds against deplorable Christians. Huh?
Sadly, Democrats allow “mean girl” Ilan Omar (D-MN) to wage war against Christians. I doubt the average voter cheered when she stood on the House floor and insisted that “religious fundamentalists impose their beliefs on an entire society, criminalizing women for simply existing [while] religious politicians [talk] about freedom [with] their lives [and] choices, but talk about religion [when] it comes to other peoples lives.”
Omar is a political liability, because 72% of Americans self-describe as Christians (source: Gallup). Specific to the abortion debate, Omar has witlessly forgotten 47 percent of all women and half of all independent voters are pro-life (source: Gallup). She must be witless to repeatedly identity-shame men – when 47 percent of all American males are pro-choice. Go figure.
If this mad-liberal politician actually cared about reality, she would realize most Americans have an enlightened view of abortion; that is, it’s a deeply personal matter of private conscience. And, until common sense prevails, there will be a 50-50 divide in the electorate. Progressives will argue Alabama law is too restrictive and conservatives will argue New York law is too permissive.
Of course, my position is that doctor-provided abortions should be legal and that a compromise lies somewhere between the Alabama and New York laws. Further, the principle of stare decisis will influence the Supreme Court as it rules on state abortion laws. Upholding Roe v. Wade will not legalize infanticide or ever prevent the permissive from flocking to abortion clinics in New York and California.
Common sense suggests the principles of federalism will permit state electorates to work within Roe v. Wade to reflect a given state’s morality. After all, Americans tolerate differences with foreign allies; such as Japan’s views on race and Kuwait’s views on religion. If 40% of Catholics are pro-choice, it proves individual abortion views are intellectually and socially nuanced – probably because of advances in medicine and changes to social constructs.
Most Americans know post-1972 medical advances allow any woman to self-regulate her body without having to abort in the third trimester (such as over-the-counter pregnancy kits and morning-after pills). Further, many non-Christians believe ultrasounds prove there is a “little person” in the womb at six months.
Many Americans question laws that prevent a “good” father from having a say in a late-term abortion, wondering why he cannot choose the child and relieve the mother of the consequences of her pregnancy. Further, many Americans think “good” parents of pregnant teens should be notified, because responsibility and wisdom are not magically bestowed by pregnancy.
What is unconscionable is the reduction of majority identity groups into demonic stereotypes. If many men and Catholics are pro-choice, why demonize them as anti-women? If moderates, such as Joe Biden, think tax-payer money should not fund abortions (the Hyde amendment), why attack him as anti-women? It is absurd to argue extreme positions for or against abortion.
The firebrand Ilhan Omar is flat wrong and irresponsible when she makes untrue and divisive assertions. She is flat un-American when she belittles the views of pro-life women. After all, they have the constitutional right to speak – and should be heard. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, blame extremists (like Omar), who gave conservative justices (like Thomas) the arguments to ignore stare decisis. The abortion uber alles movement is only pushing moderates further right. Someone make them stop!
